Introduction
The amphidial aperture shows little variation throughout the class. Most commonly it is porelike and located dorsolaterally on the lateral labia or anterior extremity. In some instances they are oval or cleftlike or located postlabially (generally in immatures). The cephalic sensilla are located on the labial region and are porelike or papilliform. In some parasitic groups the number of sensilla are reduced from 16 to four. At the level of the nerve ring there are generally a pair of sensilla called deirids. Generally there is a pair of sensilla located on the caudal region called phasmids. The cells of the hypodermis may be multinucleate. The cuticle varies from four layers to two layers and is generally transversely striated. Laterally, along most of the body length, there is a lateral wing area marked by longitudinal striae or ridges. In some parasitic forms the lateral alae may extend out from the body contour for a distance equal to the body diameter (Maggenti, 1991).
