Introduction

The subclass is characterized by a diversity of characters. When the amphid is pouchlike the aperture is transverse or cyathiform. When the internal structure is tubiform the aperture may be porelike, ellipsoid, or greatly elongated. The cephalic sensilia are papilliform, setiform, or a mixture of both. Caudal glands are present or absent, however, they are generally present in marine nematodes. The esophageal glands open either into the anterior esophagus, through stomatal teeth, or posterior to the nerve ring. The typical number of esophageal glands appears to be five, however, in animal parasitic forms the esophageal glands are duplicated exterior to the esophagus and are referred to as a stichosome. The form is cylindrical to wine bottle-shaped. The subclass is divided into two superorders: Marenoplica and Terrenoplica (Maggenti, 1991).
