The
Sand Hills are generally viewed as a dry grassland, characterized by sandy
soils and low precipitation. Yet paradoxically, the Sand Hills are also
a land of lakes and wetlands. While many of the interdunal valleys are
dry, many others contain lakes, marshes, and/or wet meadows. The Sand Hill
fens are peatlands,
where groundwater-saturated soils form under anaerobic conditions. The
resulting highly organic soils support a wide variety of plant and animal
life.
