This region of flat and rolling plains, also known as mixed-grass steppe, is a transitional zone from the tallgrass prairies and central forests to the east with the shortgrass prairies to the west. Stretching from central Nebraska to central Texas and encompassing a large portion of central Kansas and Oklahoma, it contains a mixture of shortgrass and tallgrass species.
