Aphelenchoides centralis Thorne & Malek, 1968

Body slightly arcuate tapering anteriorly until lip region is 1/3 width of neck base. Lateral field a narrow band 1/5 body width. Lips set off by expansion. Spear 12u long, devoid of basal swellings. Medain bulb spheroid. Esophageal glands forced out of position by anterior end of ovary. Intestinal cells with single nucleus. Sperms present in uterine tract. Posterior uterine branch reaching 1/3 distance to tail, containing many sperms. Posterior cells of intestine without granules. Tail uniformly conoid to narrowed terminus with central spicate projection. Males not collected.

Aphelenchoides centralis is distinctive because of the spear without basal swellings and the very outstanding central “spike” of the terminus.

Holotype female and 2 other specimens indexed under Aphelenchoides 7.

Habitat: Soil from corn field east of Fairmont, Nebraska.
