Distribution:  Across the U.S.

Origin:  Atlantic and Gulf Coast drainages

Characteristics:  Deep-bodied minnow species with a distinctive golden olive-silver color

Impacts:  They compete with other baitfish species for food and habitat

Management:  Nothing is being done to manage these fish in Nebraska

 The Golden shiner is widely used as bait and as an ornamental and therefore has been transplanted into many areas, including areas of Nebraska.
