      POSITION DESCRIPTION/ANNOUNCEMENT

      Research Affiliate

      Plant Nematology
USDA-ARS is seeking a Research Affiliate (post doc) to work in the potato research program at Cornell University Ithaca, NY.  Our research project focuses on potato nematodes with special emphasis on the potato cyst nematode (golden nematode) that is under state and federal quarantine. We have identified two pathotypes (races) of the golden nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) in New York State that differ in virulence on resistant potatoes.  The Research Affiliate involved in the program will study the population genetics of these two pathotypes as influenced by host resistance.  Since host resistance is a major contributor to managing this nematode, we are interested in developing potato cultivars with combined resistance to both pathotypes.  In addition, the individual will cooperate in the development of such cultivars and test the success of combined resistance in the field. Further work may involve cooperative efforts to map golden nematode resistance genes in potato and develop molecular markers to distinguish the two nematode pathotypes. This is a two-year appointment with possibilities for renewal. Salary for this position is $37,428 per annum. Must be a U.S. citizen. Contact Dr. Bill Brodie at (607) 255-7845 or bbb2@cornell.edu .  USDA-ARS is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
