The project I had planned to work on with another colleague has not panned out. The sabbatical is unusual in that it is for a full year at half time, meaning I cannot relocate but must stay here and teach half time. I am an animal parasitologist with past experience on Haemonchus in sheep, Thelastoma in cockroaches, and mosquito biology. I presently have a couple of genera of Entomopathogenic nematodes in culture. I am coming off 7 years as department chair and so do not posses skills in most of the new fields involving DNA and such, but would like to learn. I could come to another lab for brief visits of a week or two in the summer, or during the school year for a few days at a time. Does anyone out there have any ideas or opportunities for nematode related research for someone of such peculier and limited restrictions? The aim of the project is to identify key genes in the signal transduction pathways with a view to modifying these genes to provide novel means of control. The duties will include producing appropriate infected plant material and undertaking comparative molecular studies to identify appropriate genes for genetic manipulation. Later in the project modified plants will be produced to examine the expression of these genes and assess resistance to nematodes both histologically and in bioassays. Candidates will ideally have a PhD and appropriate molecular and biological skills related to nematode or pathogen/plant interactions.
