Since nematode communities offer interesting possibilities in environmental studies, the Wageningen University offers a nematode identification course (see also www.spg.wau.nl/nema/MI_lit.htm) which is delivered in English. due to the high international interest. The course runs for two weeks, full time, and is held in the last two weeks of June (starting June 19). The course focuses on the routine identification of terrestrial and freshwater nematodes. Lectures are included regarding anatomy, functional morphology, molecular tools, nomenclature, community structure analysis (MI) and to specific difficulties in certain groups (Dorylaims, Pratylenchus or Meloidogyne). The practical part of the course is based on the study of nematode families and lower taxa with the help of a manual (available in Dutch, English and Spanish). A final exam is held on the last day for which participants are required to identify 10 specimens to species level. A possibility exists in the second week to focus on tropical nematodes, plant parasites, marine nematodes or other groups. For those registered as a student at a Dutch University or University abroad with a cooperation agreement with the Wageningen University there is no fee. For others, the fee for the course is 1500 guilders (about US$750), including literature.
