The NE State forest at Halsey represents a disturbance within the native grasslands of the Sand Hills. The Nebraska Sand Hills were formed approximately 8,000 years ago by wind deposited sands. Ponderosa pines only exist naturally on the margins of the Sand Hills, primarily along the ridges of the Niobrara Valley. We wish to document the changes in nematode community structure associated with the dramatic ecological alterations which accompany the establishment of this hand-planted forest.
