Status in Nebraska:
The
emerald ash borer is not currently found in Nebraska.
Distribution:
This insect is found in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana
and Windsor, Canada.
Origin and Time of Introduction:
It is from Asia and arrived in Michigan in June
of 2002. It is believed to have come inside solid wood packing material.
Common Characteristics:
Adult beetles are metallic green in color and
leave a D shaped exit hole when they emerge from the tree in the spring.
Environmental Impact:
The emerald ash borer causes massive deforestation
and kills ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) almost exclusively.
Management:
Quarantines on live ash trees and firewood movement
will delay the spread of this insect. Use of a systemic insecticide
on a non-infested tree may prevent or delay infestation.
