Distribution:
Believed to be wherever you find honey bees.
Common Characteristics:
A very small mite found in the tracheal system of adult bees, they
like to feed on the haemolylmph (blood) of the insects. It doesn’t do any
known major damage except for the shorting of the bee’s life which can
reduce yield if the infestation is large enough.
Management:
Some British and American bees have shown some resistance. Acaricides
have been tested, and a formic acid under the name apicure has been approved
for use.
